A Charm for ye tooth ach.

English Recipe Book, 17th century - 18th century (Wellcome Collection, MS.8097; p.42)

For the treatment of a toothache.

Transcription & translation:

Abraham, Abraham, art thou asleep or awake?

What shall I do for this wretched tooth ahce?

Trust in God and Christ his sone.

And this wicked tooth ache will be gone anon.

This should be written in long bit of paper, near an inch wide, then roll it up as hard as you can and seal it upon the side and at the top and bottom, and so let the person constantly carry it about them, but they must not know what it is.
